I was fortunate to be born to an artistic family. My father was a painter, and my grandfather photographer, oil painter, and renaissance man. Growing up in my grandparent's home in Germany, for the formative years of my life, imbued me with a passion for travel, learning about other cultures, and photography.
It was my grandfather who bought me my first camera, and who carried his camera wherever we went. I loved his eye for everything in life. He froze all the amazing moments in our lives. Decades later, we love looking at slide shows from my grandparent's vacations in various countries of Europe. He not only captured the purity and beauty of the area's architechture and nature, but also the personality of the individuals that peopled it.
It was from growing up in a beautiful and inspiring environment, that moved me to begin carrying my camera wherever I went.
About 8 years ago I started a website where I could share photos and impressions of my travels with friends. This would later develop into a public site where I shared all of my photography, including portraiture.
Photography as a business developed slowly, and by chance. I studied Mass Comm and Journalism at the University, but began working part time in Nursing homes during high school and college. I eventually felt that entering the nursing field was the best and right decision for my future. So, for the the next 9 years I studied and worked in the healthcare field. Photographing my travels and adventures as I moved around increased, though I treated it as I did my writing. A hobby.
In about 2005, friends recommended I photograph a birthday party, another asked me to photograph her family. After photographing my first two events, I knew I had found my true calling. Responses were overwhelming. Referrals began building, and working in a hospital setting gave me a lot of exposure that I needed.
The more people I captured, the more I realised that this was the greatest thing in the world. To freeze special moments, occasions, love, new life, and happiness. Any setting, situation, dynamics, or special requests, gave me a welcome challenge that was met by happy smiles and great results.
I have built a business around individualized attention, a photojournalistic and candidly fun approach, and a desire to create works of art.
Keeping myself educated on the industry and new technologies has also maintained a competitive edge for me. Being a member of the Professional Photographers of America has been one of the driving forces in realizing my dreams.
I have the greatest job in the world. There is diversity, dynamic, creativity, and imagination involved in this business. The best shoots are those in which I can engage ideas, vision, and the creative spirit. This is always a collaboration of sorts between me and my clients. Though I feel I am still just beginning, I have had many diverse subjects and clients. From weddings, to bands, comedy troupes, newborns, maternity, individual portraits, engagements, birthday parties, architectural, landscape, travel, pet, to still life. What an amazing journey it has been.
